Ideas for a Great July 4th

Happy birthday, America! What are your plans this July 4th? Here are some great ideas for
a wonderful Fourth of July celebration.

1.  Barbecue Cookout
Host a backyard barbecue at your house or plan a July 4th block party with your neighbors. Decorate the place in patriotic colors and put together a crowd-pleasing menu. From burgers to hot dogs, grilling recipes to salads, check out our great July 4th menu ideas here. You can even suggest a potluck party to make it easier on everyone. Don’t forget to plan some activities for the kids – how about horseshoes, croquet, three-legged races and tug of war. Time the barbecue party right so that it ends just in time for everyone to watch the fireworks.

2. Picnic in the park
In some areas, you can catch the fireworks show from a nearby park. So gather the family for a picnic in the park. Plan an easy menu such as sandwiches and hot dogs and bring along some lawn games for the kids. Don’t forget the cooler of ice-cold beverages. Respect the rules of the park – practice safe grilling and clean up your mess.

3. Hit the Beach
Many of us look forward to spending time at the beach during the long July 4th holiday. Look for hotel or vacation rental deals. You can even plan the trip with a group of people. Suggest for each friend or family member to bring a favorite dish. Don’t forget the beach essentials – bathing suits, beach towels and the sunscreen. You can catch the fireworks at the beach. Some beaches may allow you to build a campfire so you can relax with the group over roasted S’mores...yummy!

4. Get on a cruise
If you’re looking to do something different, how about celebrating July 4th on a cruise ship? Do some research and you may find cruises or sails that offer you the chance to enjoy dinners and drinks onboard plus catch the fireworks display over the bay.

5. Plan a trip to Mount Rushmore
How about making a family trip to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial this year? The Memorial kicks off Independence Day every year on July 3rd with many programs throughout the day such as presidential re-enactment, education programs and entertainment. There will be food vendors set up throughout the memorial also. The fireworks display usually begins around 9:20 p.m. on July 3rd.

6. Enjoy a spectacular fireworks at
the National Mall

This is the place to be to celebrate July 4th. There will be day-long activities for all ages, including a parade, festival, concerts, and of course, a spectacular display of fireworks over the Washington Monument.

Be sure to check out the local listings or directory for some great July 4th events happening in your area.
